Swollen veins, known as hemmoroids are located in the anal canal. While it is painful, it is not life threatening. Approximately 10 million Americans have hemorrhoids. There are two types known as internal and external.

When veins grow to be engorged inside the canal internal hemorrhoids develop. If the engorgement happens next to the opening, external hemorrhoids form. Having both simultaneously is possible. Healing and indications will vary according to which one you have.

The reason hemorrhoids develop is because of stress on the veins in the pelvis or rectal region.

Usually, the tissue inside the anus fills up with blood to assist in controlling bowel movements. If you have to strain to move your bowels, the pressure can cause the veins to swell and stretch. This leads to hemorrhoids.

Force from constipation or diarrhea.

It is common for a pregnant woman to get hemorrhoids during her pregnancy. Pregnancy causes an increase on the veins n the pelvic area. Also the pressure on the body from labor has a tendency to cause hemorrhoids or can make them worse.

Being overweight can lead to hemorrhoids as well.

Symptoms of both types include bleeding during bowel movements, itching and pain when cleaning the area.

For internal hemorrhoids, blood may be present on your bowel movements or on toilet paper.

Internal hemorrhoids are generally little, distended veins in the wall of the channel. The veins may also protrude from the rectal region and are quite large. When compressed by the rectal muscles they are excruciating if they protrude. It is also excruciating if they are cut off from the blood supply.

The external kind might bleed. The blood then gathers and causes a hard lump that is painful.

Having a physical done can let you know if you have them or not.

Assessments might not be required for those under 50 if the doctor believes the bleeding is due to hemorrhoids. Using a finger that is covered with a glove, the doctor will perform a rectal exam or use a lighted scope to view the inside.

If the doctor rules out hemorrhoids through the physical exam, then they may choose to perform a colonoscopy or use a sigmoidscope to check for rectal, colon or anal cancer. All three of those cancers share bleeding as a symptom.

For treating external hemorrhoids at home, take over the counter medication, consume a lot of water and include fiber in your diet. These steps can prevent and cure hemorrhoids. Most external hemorrhoids will respond to the cure.

Internal hemorrhoids can be treated with the same methods.

Tying off hemorrhoids using rubber band or scar tissue might be done by the doctor to decrease their size or make them disappear by denying them blood. If this does not work, or if they are bad enough, another cure might be necessary.

If these cures do not work, surgery may be necessary.

To prevent hemorrhoids or keep them from worsening eat foods high in fiber like fruits, whole grains and vegetables. Drink plenty of water and exercise regularly to for prevention efforts also.

Seek a homeopath’s advice. “Used in conjunction with diet and lifestyle changes, homeopathic medicines provide an extra little push in relieving constipation,” says homeopath constipation doctor Danna Ulnam. Among the medicines he prescribes are Bryonia, as a stool softener; Calcarea carbonica, for those who don’t feel the urge to go; and Nux vomica, for those who feel the urge but don’t pass anything. Which Constipation medicine will work best for you depends on your individual symptoms.

Chinese Medicine

Stick to spicy stimulators. Among practicioners of Chinese medicine, it is thought that constipation develops when there is an imbalance in the Large Intestine and Stomach organ systems, according to Efrem Korngold, O.M.D., L.Ac.

When treating patients who have constipation, practitioners of Chinese medicine often prescribe spicy foods to stimulate peristalsis. These foods include ginger, radishes, orange peel, persimmons, and rhubarb. In cases of mild constipation associated with indigestion or a cold, practitioners may also prescribe Curing Pills, which contain 15 different herbs.

Point a finger at the problem. Acupressure has proved effective in stimulating a balky bowel. Michael Reed Gach, founder and director of the Acupressure Institute, recommends applying steady, penetrating finger pressure to each of the following points for 3 minutes.

Large Intestine 11, located at the outer end of your elbow crease on the thumb side

Large Intestine 4, located on the back of your hand where the bones of your thumb and index finger meet

Conception Vessel 6, located three finger-widths directly below your navel

Stomach 25, located four finger-widths to either side of your navel

Stomach 36, located four finger-widths below your kneecap and one fingerwidth toward the outside of your shinbone

If acupressure doesn’t provide relief from constipation, consult an acupuncturist instead. Frequently, needle stimulation by a professional works when finger pressure doesn’t.

Acupuncture is an effective remedy for treating constipation medicines . You should have a bowel movement 2 to 3 times a day. If you are not experiencing bowel movements this frequently or have painful passage of hard stool, it may lead to bowel obstruction and disease. It is important to become regular through a safe method such as acupuncture.
Acupuncture helps restore proper circulation, eliminate pain and balance the body. In Chinese medicine, constipation is caused by a deficiency in the spleen and stomach. It is also a result in dryness of the large intestines from foods that do not support the digestive process.

Particular acupuncture points have an effect on gastrointestinal mobility, serving as a remedy for constipation. Acupuncture treatments can relax the colon, spleen and stomach to stimulate movement. In addition, herbs can be made especially for constipation, which will relax stuck qi and restore intestinal function. Qi is the layer of life force.

Acute constipation is generally resolved within two acupuncture treatments and with the use of herbal laxatives from the acupuncturist. Eating high fiber foods will help the success of your acupuncture treatment.

What is entirely beneficial about acupuncture is that in one session you can be treated for multiple symptoms. You can receive treatment for constipation, hair loss, shoulder pain and headaches all in the same day.

In addition, acupuncture is entirely safe. It has been practiced in China for more than 5,000 years. Most insurance companies now cover acupuncture treatments. It is one of the most used alternative therapies in the modern world.

Having regular constipation can lead to some serious illnesses. Fecal matter should move through your colon easily and in a given time. When fecal matter remains in your colon for days, your colon becomes toxic and spreads this toxicity into every part of the body. In the bloodstream, these toxins interfere with the deliver of oxygen to the cells and tissues of your body.

If you have to strain and squeeze to have a bowel movement, you can damage the tissues in the lower part of your colon and the blood vessels in your legs.

In the Past

Over 90 years ago and more, doctors knew about the importance of a clean colon. In 1908 Eli Metchnifoff, director of the Pasteur Institute, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine. His research showed that pathogenic colon bacteria, bad bacteria (I will cover this in a later chapter) produced toxic secretions and by products, which acted as slow poisoning of the entire body.

Metchnifoff believed that toxic matter coming from your colon was responsible for every degenerating disease. His belief was so strong that he suggested that man’s life span was certainly cut in half when his colon was neglected and allowed to have excessive toxic producing bacteria.

In 1931 Dr. Joseph H. Greer, was telling his patients what to do to end constipation and how to prevent it. Today, nutritionists and other health practitioners are telling their clients the same thing.

In his small book, The Drugless Road to Perfect Health, 1931, Joseph H. Greer, M.D. reminds his patients,

“You must have ‘roughage’ to make the bowels move freely. Concentrated food (processed foods) and constipation go hand in hand, (and) then pills (laxatives) are used. More constipation and more pills, it is a vicious circle with bad results. Don’t be afraid of cracked wheat, cornmeal, cut oats, raw cabbage, onions and celery. They are far better than refined flour and the package foods that flood the market. They may save some labor in the kitchen, but they produce constipation.”

Today, it is well accepted by nutritionists, Naturopathic doctors, and other alternative medicine practitioners, that constipation is a signal that cannot be ignored and your colon function must be kept efficient and well functioning. To ignore constipation for long periods of time can lead to some serious illnesses. Mostly likely you will not live to be a ripe old age and if you do it will be with some disability.

Chronic constipation treatment is a symptom you cannot ignore -- even if it occurs only occasionally -because it leads to slow poisoning of your entire body.

Many doctors, for a longtime, have refused to believe that constipation can cause other parts of the body to become weaken and become unable to perform their function. You will still find Internet articles, anatomy books, and health books suggesting that for some people bowel movements in 3 days or more can be normal.

You do not have to wait for a disease to take hold of your body so doctors can see you are ill. Take responsibility for your health and don’t let constipation become a reoccurring condition.
